Starting The Homestead Journey

I can honestly say that I didn’t expect to be here and doing this a few years ago. 3 years ago, I was perfectly content with being a 911 dispatcher and living life by the moment. I’ve raised my children and was just loving being a Grammy.

Life definitely took a strange turn. I found myself being a 37-year-old widow, then falling in love with a man from a neighboring state. Falling fast and hard wasn’t in my plans but he was definitely a dark horse (completely unexpected). I met my husband in May of ’21, moved to southwest Kansas in June, got engaged in August and then eloped to Washington state in September. Everything happened so fast. (Not that I regret a second of it)

We were living in town and decided to move out to the farm. I hated living in town. I wanted the freedom of walking outside without anyone a few feet away. Fresh air and a place I could have a few chickens for fresh eggs. My husband made that dream come true within 2 months.

We’ve been on our homestead now for 1 1/2 years. We have put so much work into the land and our home. We live by the motto “Go big”.

Since May of ’22 we started off with 50 baby chicks, now we have hundreds of birds. Our birds have become our life. We now hatch and raise chickens, quail, ducks, and peacocks. We’ve definitely went big! We hatch out a minimum of 100 birds a week between all of them. I have my prized Ayam Cemani chickens (which happen to be my absolute favorite). I have a problem with becoming too attached to some and they’ve become pets. I cannot imagine life being any different or wanting anything different.

If you told me a little over a year ago that I would be taking care of 100’s of birds a day and enjoying my life in this manner, I would’ve told you that you were insane! But here I am killing it! LOL

My husband and I love the life we have created and can’t imagine anything else. Since becoming a widow, I try to live life to the fullest. Life goes by so quickly. Enjoy the little moments and the people you have around you.
